Q: What is a Massage Practitioner?
A: A Massage Practitioner is authorized by certificate to perform all aspects of massage that are non-medical. This includes a light, firm or deep touch as well as chair massage.
Q: What is a Licensed Massage Therapist?
A: A Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) performs all aspects of Massage Therapy within the limited scope of practice set forth by the State Medical Board of Ohio. Upon graduation from the Massage Therapy Course, students become eligible for the State of Ohio Medical Board Licensure Exam. Once a student passes that exam (offered twice a year) the title of Massage Therapist is obtained.
Q: What is the difference between a Massage Practitioner and a Massage Therapist?
A: A Massage Therapist goes to school for a longer period of time and tests for the State Medical Board Licensure Examination. Once licensure is achieved, is permitted to perform medical massage and work with medical professionals.
A Massage Practitioner has a shorter education and is not required to be licensed by the State Medical Board of Ohio due to the non-medical nature of the certificate.
Q: What is medical massage vs. non-medical massage?
A: Medical Massage would involve providing massage services to Workers’ Compensation clients through the referral of a Physician, Physical Therapist or Chiropractor. Most massage performed at salons, spas, recreational facilities or from home or personal office are not medical massage.
Q: Is the Massage Practitioner Program approved by the State of Ohio?
A: YES! This program has been reviewed and approved by the State of Ohio Board of Career Colleges and Schools #09-05-1897 T. Renew Wellness Center and School of Ethical Massage is considered a Career College.
Q: Is the Licensed Massage Therapist Program approved by the State of Ohio?
A: YES! This program has been approved by both the State of Ohio Board of Career Colleges AND the State of Ohio Medical Board.
Q: Is the Massage Practitioner Program approved by the State Medical Board of Ohio?
A: No. This is not a medical certificate; therefore approval from the State of Ohio Medical Board is not necessary.
Q: Who is a candidate to attend a Massage Practitioner Program?
A: Having a Massage Practitioner Certificate opens the door to self employment as well as opportunities in salons or spas.
Q: Who is a candidate to attend a Licensed Massage Therapist Program?
A: Anyone interested in the prospects Massage Therapy has to offer. As mentioned, Massage Therapists offer a wider scope of knowledge than the practitioner and are able to work with medical professionals, opening the doors to opportunity in working with fields such as; physical therapy, workers’ compensation, physician referrals, chiropractors, etc.
